If there is one thing that feels like it has to be a must, when writing is involved, then it’s that we enjoy it. Ultimately, this is why we write. The enjoyment of creating characters and worlds. Of weaving a plot together. Of becoming invested in those characters you created, as they influence their own stories.
It would be lying if we said we didn’t want something out of our writing – you know, a nice book deal and to see our words in print – but it’s not why we write. We write because it is a massive form of freedom. To be very trendy:
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies…The man who never reads lives only one.”
― George R.R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons
We write for the same reason, to build lives that could never exist, and maybe, one day to give them to other people. We write because we love to, because it’s the first, last and all the free middle bits of every day, and we sincerely hope that’s why everyone does.
